Mumbai: 18 year old standby, burning midnight oil before the 12th grade exam, helps prevent tragedies by raising alarms when a big fire broke in Santacruz High Rise Post at night on Saturday and Sunday night.
Around 12:30 a.m., the fire broke on the first floor of the six-storey Rachna Mandir Building.
Meera Patel, a school student Narsee Jamnabai, is preparing for a chemical exam, which is scheduled to be held on Monday, when he realizes that something is wrong.
The teenager rushed out and found that the fire erupted in one of the rooms.
His parents are outside the city.
Wasting had no time, he ran out, shouted ‘fire’ to remind the occupants of the building.
Meera told the Toi that her priority was to ensure that she and the guard took her 85-year-old grandmother before the flame swallowed flat.
“If the flame covered the entire house, it would be difficult to bring it out.
The fire was in my mother’s dance studio in our flat.
There was nothing in the room we thought could burn, so I was really surprised to see the fire out from it,” he said.
One flat owner said the teenager was a true hero.
“He smelled the smell of his smoke, ran out and shouted his lungs, ‘Fire, Fire, Fire, until all the residents heard and were evacuated around 1am,” he said.
Patel must move because of the flat in habitable condition.
Meera hopes to appear for the test on Monday.
