Mumbai University proposes 74 new colleges for 2022-23

Mumbai: The University Academic Agency Mumbai proposes to start 74 new universities for the next academic year in 2022-23 during the meeting held on Thursday.
Colleges in various locations are proposed based on recommendations from the council board.
Of the 74 colleges proposed in a new perspective, 17 is in the city of Mumbai and the suburbs, 18 ine and the rest in Raigad, Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri and Palghar.
Last year, the University had proposed 36 new universities for the 2021-22 academic session in his perspective.
Then, the state government added 18 again to the list.
Finally, only 24 college management showed interest and applied and got the last nod from the country.
This year, more than doubled the amount is proposed by the University, and, if approved, the total affiliate colleges tend to cross 900.
The university perspective plan – withdrawn to see the overall academic expansion and infrastructure for the next academic year – has now recommended starting at 46 New college, science and trade, 15 legal colleges, eight nights and three women’s colleges.
While 12 locations have been identified in the suburbs of Mumbai, five in the city.
The plan will be sent to the government after the approval of the University Senate.
After the location is complete, the application will be invited from interested parties willing to establish a college.
Of the 74, almost 15 locations came from the previous year’s plan, said a university official.
The plan, however, was opposed by several members of the Academic Council at the meeting.
University of Bombay Universities and college teachers (Buctu) have claimed a few chairs in the existing college is empty.
Overall, the university has seen 20% registration in the pandemic year.
Four Buctu members recorded their dissent in the letter submitted to the Chancellor’s representative.
“The plan seems very unscientific and illogical.
The proposal has been stated without a fundamental study, and without considering geographical conditions and geographical location,” they said.
They are increasingly showing that student registration from 2019 has fallen and currently universities in Konkan have not succeeded in filling even 50% of their usual registration.
Members refuse to be part of the proposed plan.
Academic council members said the plan was compiled based on the demands of various stakeholders and local representatives.
The state government can add or delete several locations of the proposed plan but in the end management less applies, so there will be no surplus, he added.
