Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei: Chief of Junta Myanmar will be excluded from the upcoming ASEAN Summit, the group said on Saturday, a rare reprimand because of fears rose at the commitment of the military government to demean the bloody crisis.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs from the Association of Southeast Asian nations agreed at an emergency meeting at the end of Friday that Min Aung Hlaing would not be invited to the October 26-28 Summit, said the ASEAN Brunei seat.
Blocks, are widely regarded as organizations without ompong, standing upright after the Junta rejects a request for a special envoy to meet with all parties concerned – the phrase that is seen including the civil leader who was overthrown with Aung San Suu Kyi.
The statement noted “inadequate progress” in the implementation of the five-point plan agreed upon by ASEAN leaders in April to end the chaos after the coup in February.
Some member countries recommend giving “space for Myanmar to restore internal affairs and return to normal”.
It was decided “to invite non-political representatives from Myanmar” to the top, “while recording a reservation from Myanmar’s representative”, said the statement.
Mustafa Izzuddin, a global affair analyst at the Singapore Solaris Consultation, called Exclusion “The size of a political throne for ASEAN to relieve international criticism”.
“Second, this ensures its regional reputation as an organization that can still play an active role in Southeast Asian affairs,” he told AFP.
Izzuddin also said the move sent “the political signal” to the junta “that ASEAN is not pushed around, and that Myanmar must show his seriousness and commitment to launch the plan of five points”.
Myanmar, mostly ruled by the military since the 1962 coup, has become a thorn on the ASEAN side since joining in 1997.
The General Election in 2015 Won by the National Party of Suu Kyi for the Democratic Party (NLD) was delivered at the beginning of the civilian government – but this was cut off by cout d’etat.
ASEAN has been under international pressure to overcome the riots that erupted after Putsch, including massive protests; new clashes between military and ethnic rebel forces in the border area; and the economy rotates to free plunge.
The block has expressed disappointment in the lack of cooperation from the junta, which continues to take action against the differences of opinion.
More than 1,000 civilians have been killed, according to local monitoring groups.
The part of the consensus is to allow a long-delayed visit by a special envoy, Brunei’s second foreign minister Erywan Yusof.
ASEAN insisted that he met all the parties concerned, but Junta rejected every meeting proposed with the people who were tried, among them Suu Kyi, who faced allegations including incitement and canceled the restrictions on Koronavirus during the poll.
Member countries have voiced their disappointment on the road that the Junta has chosen.
“Malaysia was very disappointed that after six months from April, Minister Erywan could not go to Myanmar,” said Malaysian Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah said at the beginning of the meeting.
“If there is no real progress, Malaysia’s attitude will still: that we will not want the General to attend the Summit.
There is no compromise about it.” Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said in a tweet after the meeting that his country had proposed that Myanmar “should not be represented at the political level” at the top to restore “his democracy through an inclusive process”.
The main ASEAN dialogue partner also threw their weight behind the call for the special envoy to meet Suu Kyi.
In a shared statement, Friday, USA, England, Australia, Canada, South Korea, New Zealand, Norway and East Timor said they were “very concerned about the terrible situation in Myanmar”, and urged Nayyidaw to “constructively involved” with Erywan.
Junta – officially known as the State Administration Board – has promised to hold an election and raised an emergency in August 2023.
Another ASEAN member was Cambodia, Laos, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
