National Center for Geodesy in IIT-K is now operational

Kanpur: Supported by the Department of Science and Technology, the Government of Indonesia, National Geodesy Center (NCG) has been operating in IIT-Kanpur from July 1, 2019.
Complete facilities and the central infrastructure was inaugurated on September 16 (Friday) during the PMMC meeting (monitoring and management committee committee Project).
This center is now fully operating with advanced equipment and resources with Prof Onkar Dikshit, from the Civil Engineering Department as its coordinator.
The aim of the NCG is to explore and strengthen the education, capacity building, and R & D activities in the field of Geodi, by conducting research and development activities, regulating outreach activities, and by acting as a national center for students and researchers who work in the Geodesy area through training programs Regular, scholarships, etc.
With the mandate of producing trained human resources and providing advanced facilities, NCGs are actively involved in regulating training and research activities in the field of Geodesy and recently launched a new Special DIIT course for working professionals.
Center Research activities include geodetic techniques for pole motion studies and in determining the parameters of the earth’s rotation, determining the right gravitational fields using satellite gravity missions such as grace, scissors, champions, etc.
It also expands training, laboratories and resource support for students.
And researchers from universities and other institutions, and also suggest the state / central government department on various geodesy related problems.
NCG has initiated activities on the development of geodetic infrastructure, research and development, short and long-term training programs.
As a step forward, NCG has now proposed a regional center setting for Geodesy (RCG) in the institution that works in the field of geodesy and relevant discipline.
The main goal of RCG is working together with NCG to the spread of education in the subject of geodesy, capacity building, conducting advanced research and development activities.
Various NCG activities and proposals to prepare various RCGs were discussed in the second PMMC meeting attended by Padma Shri Dr.
VP Dimri, former Director of Ngri (Chair), Dr.
P.S.
Acharya (Head of NGP and NSDI, DST), Dr.
D Dutta and Dr.
Ak Singh (senior official from DST), Dr.
VK Dadhwal (former Director of Indian Space Sciences), Dr.
PK Garg (IIT ROORKEE), Dr.
Deeraj Kumar (IIT -Ism), and DR Rajiv Srivastava (Indian survey).
Prof.
Onkar Dikshit expressed his gratitude to the support provided by the Department of Science and Technology and IIT Kanpur, which helped in establishing infrastructure and facilities for the center.
Dr.
Dutta suggests that NCG must act as a nucleus for capacity building and R & D in Geodesy, which will contribute to the main components to achieve the right position for other social applications and to achieve the target of 5 trillion economies mentioned by the Prime Minister.
Maj Gen (DR) B Nagarajan expressed his gratitude to the Department of Science and Technology and IIT Kanpur.
He said that various students and researchers in the center have started their research work in the field of geodi, and the center is now focused on coming with productive research and development activities in Geodesy.
Dr.
VP Dimri said that NCG must ensure that there are sharing and archiving data from RCG and must be available openly to users for various applications.
V.
K.
Dadhwal said that, “Important steps will develop a geodetic reference framework for India and involve other institutions and organizations in completing and maintaining the same”.
