NATO envoy will hold emergency talks on Tuesday in the situation in Afghanistan when the Western power scrambles to evacuate personnel from Kabul after the Taliban takeover, said an alliance official.
Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will then hold a press conference at 1300 GMT – his first appearance in front of the media since June – as a roll alliance after the collapse of the Afghan government forces.
Stoltenberg tweeting the week that NATO “helps keep Kabul airports open to facilitate and coordinate evacuation”, but there is a scene of chaos because the crowd tries to board the plane departing.
The Taliban power seizure came after NATO pulled its 9,500-strong mission behind the decision from US President Joe Biden to attract his troops.
Armin Laschet, candidate from Angela Merkel’s party to replace him as a German Chancellor, on Monday described the situation as “the biggest disaster that had been suffered by NATO since its establishment” – seven decades ago.
