New Delhi: Delhi Wetland Authority has provided a unique identification number to 1,040 waterbodies in the capital.
While the city is always believed to have around 1,000 ponds, this is the first time they have been identified in official records.
From those who remember the UID figure, 995 has also been mapped on the GPS platform.
Wetland authorities have improved the June 2022 deadline for notification of all wetlands for conservation and management.
The monitoring committee appointed by National Green Tribunal has also recommended in 2019 that Delhi landowners must prevent waterbodies encroachment and mark them with a unique ID number.
An official Wetland official said on Thursday, “After the allotment of UID and the success of wetland mapping, wise water details have been uploaded on our website.
We are now preparing a ‘short document’ for the rules and pond notifications.” TI previously reported that Delhi.
It doesn’t have the only water told.
The Ministry of Union Ministry of Environment and Forest and Climate Change was published last year to apply wetland rules (conservation and management), 2017.
Under these rules, ‘short documents’ were first prepared on any wetlands proposed to be notified by information Like demarcation of wetland boundaries, supported by accurate digital maps with coordinates and validated by land truthing.
Other information that will be included is an ecological character description, account rights and privileges and existing modalities for regulatory enforcement.
For Waterbodies 1.040 registered, landowner agents have sent 520 short documents until Thursday.
“We have asked for a brief document left on August 30,” said an official of the wetland authority.
“The Technical Committee will review brief documents and management plans prepared by the Institute in December.” The official added that the authority would continue the recommendations for the Notification of Waterbodies to the Delhi Government on March 2022 and the final notification process is expected to be completed in June next year.
Notification of ponds under wetland rules provide legal protection to the body of the water and prohibit acting such as waste disposal, waste disposal and untreated encroachment.
“Because most wetlands suffered degradation for years, institutions have submitted 587 plans for recovery, management, and their conservation,” the official said.
