Nagpur: About 24% of sanitation workers do not sweep the road.
Of a total of 7,583 sanitation workers (both permanent and daily bets), 17% work with other departments, with most of them assigned to Corporators and work as domestic assistance.
The other 7% are engaged in cleaning the sewer channel choking, disclosing data obtained from BJP ruling Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC).
Most of the 17% of sanitation workers were deployed in other departments were used as personal assistance by corporators and officials.
The data obtained from NMC revealed that 7,583 sanitation workers had been deployed with the Solid Waste Management Department (SWM) to sweep the streets of 4,400 km in corporate limits.
However, as many as 1,297 have been attached to another department, while around 525 engaged in cleaning the waste line choking at corporate limits.
Most workers attached to other departments work as personal help both with corporators or at home senior NMC officials.
The Fire Department and NMC emergency services also have 70 bets every day, which works with them as maids, assigned to it with SWM.
According to data, the number of highest sanitation workers involved for other works comes from the Gandhibagh zone.
Under this zone, of 957 sanitary workers, around 214 were involved for other work.
Followed by the lakadganj zone.
Of the 732 sanitation workers deployed for sweeping works, 154 did non-sanitary work and 71 worked to clear the drainage channel.
The situation is no different in the Dharampeth zone.
Here, of the 828 sanitation workers deployed to sweep the road, 147 attached to a different department, and 55 was spared because the sewer’s cleaning was choked.
The Mayor of Dayashankar Tiwari said the main responsibility of sanitation workers had to sweep the way, and blame the placement of workers to other places on the freezing of the state government.
“Because of the lack of staff, many sanitation workers are being deployed in other departments,” he said, refusing to comment further.
Corporator Senior Congress Sandip Sahare said many corporators used sanitation workers for personal work.
“In the past, the misuse of sanitation workers for personal work has been raised in a meeting of public bodies.
But in vain,” he said.
“This is one reason Nagpur City failed to rank Swachh Bharat.
In the last rank, the city has secured low points for Christmas roads on the former Mayor of Nanda Jichkar’s Ward,” he said.
Activists and founders of the Green Vigil Foundation Kaustav Chatterjee said, “Working hours for sanitation workers come from 6am to 2 noon.
However, almost no sanitation workers are seen sweeping the road before 8am.” “We need to improve field working hours and monitoring Which is strict, which will significantly reduce the requirements of labor and our path will also look cleaner.
We also fall short at the coordination between garbage swept and pick-up waste, “he said.
“We often see on social media, so many NGOs do road cleaning activities and claim to collect a large amount of waste.
If cleaning the road by ordinary sanitation workers, then how does this NGO collect a large amount of waste?” Chatterjee said.
“The most important thing, we must accept modern technology, gadgets and changes according to moments, considering the economic benefits.
Failure in the application of the award-winning watch concept is very disappointing.
We must agree that we failed in management and supervision of the right workforce, “He said.
