Chennai: A 21-year-old student fell on his death from the eighth floor of a multi-floor apartment complex in Chembarambakkam on Saturday.
The deceased, Navar Kumar Nellore at Andhra Pradesh had attended a birthday party and tried to reach his flat through the ventilator room on the back side because he did not have the key to enter through the main door.
He walked on a spacious pipe when he lost balance and fell.
Police said Naveen, a biotechnology student in the past year at a private college in Sripumbudur, and the other seven had rented two flat flats on the eighth floor of the 18th floor complex.
On Saturday, one of their friends celebrated his birthday and they all gathered in one flat.
Late at night, Naveen decided to go to his apartment when he realized that a friend who had the key went to attend a telephone call.
Be aware that he could not enter the flat through the main door, Naveen decided to enter through the ventilator room, a public area containing the drainage pipeline network.
Naveen, the police found, had several occasions in the past entering his apartment by climbing through the room.
This time, said a police officer, he might have slipped and fell when he was drunk.
The police quoted a witness, a friend who was part of the party meeting, said that he had asked Naveen to wait until his roommate returned but Naveen had turned the ears.
Naveen actually asked him to follow him if he also wanted to join him in his room.
“He asked him not to panic, because it was the usual way to reach his room,” said Sivakumar, an inspector attached to the Nazarathpet police station.
Even when his friend witnessed from above and asked him to be careful with his steps, Naveen slipped and landed on the ground.
He suffered a head injury and also injured on the left knee.
A surprising friend of watching warned others gathering in the apartment.
They in turn told Nazarathpet’s police who rushed to the place and sent the body to a government hospital for postmortem.
On Sunday morning, Naveen Kumar’s parents arrived and received the body, police said.
