New fish species at Zuari piques Attention of scientists

PANAJI: The discovering three rare fish species at the Zuari bay lately – 2 of these new documents – has sparked curiosity among scientists and many others, since the marine biodiversity hotspot is still a rich resource for study.
An distinctive spectacled bass, Istigobius diadema, has been discovered by Alpha Sreekanth, the fisheries scientist in Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Old Goa, whilst sampling the fishermen catch in Cacra recently.
The second person, a strange cube-shaped yellowish bass, Lactoria cornuta – furry keepers will certainly catch it to their own aquariums – had been netted with a Siridao fisherman Yogesh Santondekar near the Vasco shore.
“Both fish possess unique attributes and are new documents for Zuari.
Box fish has been listed by us at the coral reef in Grande island whilst sand goby is a marine fish,” Sreekanth stated.
The next fish which created attention on a societal networking group was that the locating of surgeonfish (Acanthurus dussumieri) in Sao Jacino island.
“Fishermen do grab it once in a while, but I have observed it for the very first time,” Silvestro D Souza, a chef that records fish species such as flavor along with other factors, stated.
ICAR’s continuing documentation in Zuari, Mandovi and Tiracol estuaries has listed over 350 species because of the participatory method of cyclists from Cacra along with different places.
“We’d be spending tens of thousands of rupees in fish poll expeditions, but the anglers supply us with exceptional fish samples we sample their grab – with no cost,” Sreekanth stated.
Zoological survey of India had listed 52 species in fresh and estuarine waters of Goa at 1972.
NIO and fisheries division followed closely inventorizing fish species along with ICAR in researching Grande island coral reefs, including Zuari bay and inland seas.
“ICAR has been mandated to investigate coastal resources across the Indian coast.
Our fish resources evaluation in Goa’s estuaries is helpful for stakeholders such as fishermen, fisheries division as well as many others to conservation and management function,” ICAR manager Parveen Kumar explained.
The scientific community information sharing with stakeholders is very essential, Goa State Biodiversity Board associate secretary Pradip Sarmokadam stated.
“After all stakeholders, both fisheries, biodiversity plank and other businesses work togetherthey match one another’s work.”
