Wellington: New Zealand on Monday reported what the authorities said was the first death in the country related to the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine.
This information was released by the Ministry of Health following a review by the Covid-19 vaccine monitoring board independent for the death of a woman after receiving a vaccine.
The ministry’s statement did not give the age of the woman.
The Board considers that the death of the woman because of myocarditis, known as the rare side effect of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine, the statement said.
Myocarditis is inflammation of the heart muscle that can limit the ability of organs to pump blood and can cause changes in the rhythm of the heartbeat.
“This is the first case in New Zealand where death in the days after vaccination has been associated with the Pfizer Vaccine Covid-19,” the Ministry of Health said.
The Pfizer Media team in New Zealand does not immediately reply to email requests for comments.
This case has been referred to the coronary and the cause of death has not been determined, the Ministry of Health said.
However, the independent council does consider that myocarditis may be due to vaccination.
The Board also notes that there are other medical problems that occur at the same time that might have influenced the results after vaccination.
“The benefits of vaccination with the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine continue to be far greater than the risk of Covid-19 infection and vaccine side effects, including myocarditis,” he added.
So far the Pfizer / Bionontech vaccine, Janssen and Astrazeneca have been temporarily approved by the New Zealand authorities.
However, the Pfizer vaccine is the only vaccine that has been approved to be launched to the public.
New Zealand fought against the Delta Covid-19 variant outbreak after almost six months into a free virus.
It reported 53 new cases on Monday, taking the total number of infections in the epidemic currently to 562.
The national key was enforced earlier this month to defeat the deployment of the Delta variant.
