AHMEDABAD: After a plan was conceived to decongest SG Road, attention is now focused on SP Ring Road with projects afoot to build several flyovers, including over Sindhu Bhavan Crossroads and Shilaj Crossroads.
The Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (Auda) has planned nine flyovers, one underpass, and one pedestrian bridge on the ring road.
The total cost for the projects is estimated to be Rs 664 crore.
Auda officials said the Sindhu Bhavan flyover and the Shilaj flyover will be connected with the existing flyover on the Ahmedabad-Viramgam railway line.
The officials said that both ends of the existing bridge will be elevated and connected with the new flyovers.
The officials said that once completed, the bridge could be nearly 1.7-2km long.
A senior officer said that with the area around the ring road developing rapidly, traffic is growing at the rate of about 25% a year.
A further increase is predicted, the officer said.
Hence these flyovers will make passage easy for those commuting on SP Ring Road, the officer said.
The officer said that during peak periods, 150 vehicles on average cross Sindhu Bhavan Crossroads and Shilaj Crossroads in an hour, often resulting in jams.
The two flyovers have been planned at the project cost of Rs 79 crore.
Officials said that the Auda is now preparing the final detailed project report and within two months, tenders will be floated for the construction of the flyovers and the underpass.
The underpass has been planned at Ognaj Crossroads and another flyover has been planned at Tapovan Crossroads.
Six other flyovers will come up at Bakrol junction, Hathijan junction, Ramol Adani junction, Vastral-Panjrapole junction, Nikol junction, and Dastan junction.
The pedestrian bridge will be established near Vastral Metro station.
Asian Development Bank’s loan will be used for the projects.
A round of talks with the bank has concluded.
The officials said that these flyovers don’t include the ones that are currently under construction.
The officials said that on the western side of the city, work has already begun on flyovers at Sarkhej Crossroads, Bopal-Karnavati Crossroads, and Science City Crossroads.
The Science City Crossroads flyover is being constructed at the project cost of Rs 74 crore.
