New Delhi: Nine people were arrested in the Moti Nagar Delhi Barat area for allegedly cheating US and Canadian-based computer users with the pretext of giving them technical support, police said on Tuesday.
The defendant was identified as Bhuvnesh Sehgal (30), Harpreet Singh (29), Pushpendra Singh Yadav (26), Saurabh Mathur (27), Ubaid Ullah (25), Surender Singh (37), Yogesh (21), Bhavya Sehgal (21) , Bhavya (25) and Gurpreet Singh (25), they said.
The police said they were told that some people run international online cheating racquets from Sudarshan Park, Moti Nagar.
They use Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) calls.
It was found that they cheated by people based in the US and Canada by reason of giving them technical support by pretending to be an official technical support executive of the software giant, a senior police officer said.
“On Saturday, the police stormed the premise where some people were busy making or receiving calls.
Nine people – Six owners and three telephotons – found involved in calls by imitating Microsoft’s technical support executives,” the Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Urvija Goel said.
The defendant will send fake pop-ups on their potential target computers regarding security threats or technical problems, DCP said.
They will then instruct the target to call the number specified in the pop-up to pay for technical support to resolve the threat, the police said.
They will prey on those who want to ensure their computer’s security, extort money from them to fix problems and resolve threats that do not exist, they said.
The victims were made to pay the number through e-checks, which were drawn in US-based bank accounts from overseas contact accused, according to the police.
Six computers, one laptop, nine phones, telecommunications software, VoIP call dialers are among other items recovered from their ownership, he added.
