Mangaluru: As an act of contingency to overcome the outbreak of water transmitted diseases, Prof.
Mackwin d’Mello, Hod of Public Health, KS Hegde Medical Academy of Nitte (considered a university), together with the team seven undergraduate research and Panchayat officials, have mapped distribution networks Drinking water in Nitte Village in the Udupi District.
Mapping with the help of E-Trex handheld devices was carried out before the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic, and the map had been submitted to the Nitte Pancayat office and Udupi Regency and the family welfare office.
Before taking the mapping of community water sources, the team has mapped the nitte village limit using GPS.

Prof.
Mackwin told Tii, “We want to map a drinking water supply network at the household level.
We reach out the pump operator and map 14 Borewell and three overhead water tanks that supply water to almost 4,000 households.
Along with the pump operator, we walked through the pipe which was put down 25 years ago.
The accuracy depends on the knowledge of the pump operator.

“We have marked the road points and public tapes, and have encoded every household.
The total amount of water sources increased to 21 out of 17.
Three health centers have also been mapped.
This project is completed in two months.
In terms of outbreak of water disease, will It’s easy to identify contamination sources and pairs.
Mapping can also help in water quality studies, “said Prof.
Mackwin.
This project has attracted inspiration from Dr.
John Snow, a pioneer in mapping the disease.
Prof.
Mackwin’s presentation of this project at a conference in Manipal received an award.
Mapping will also help in implementing easy water related projects.
“In urban areas too, mapping is needed, to track contamination and water theft,” said Prof.
