Nagpur: The second census of trees that is much delayed will be carried out by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) department after almost a decade.
The first census was conducted in 2011 when the city had 21.43 lakh trees.
The census this time will be carried out with the help of the GIS and GPS method, stating the proposal submitted by the department before the committee meeting is still held on 2.
February in accordance with the estimation by the department, the tree population in the city has increased beyond 25 lakh.
“During the first census in 2011, the NMC had calculated 21,43,838 trees within the city limits,” said the proposal.
The city is spread over 222 square kilometers and many new areas such as Hudeshwar and Narsala are then included.
So, doing a new tree census has been proposed, according to the proposal.
Trees under the NMC area under the tree law, full information and the number of inheritance trees according to the amendment to the state tree using August 2021, PBR preparation (list of biodiversity of the city), city biodiversity index, biodiversity strategies and action plans in accordance with biodiversity ACT, 2002, etc.
has been included in the proposal.
The actual census will be carried out over a period of one year, which will be followed by four years of maintenance and updating information.
This type of work is based on the tree calculation process carried out by other city companies in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Thane etc.
The Tree Authority Committee has provided the 15th census on December 15, 2018.
Total work costs must be paid in phases for five years with total RS6 Crore expenditure.
Of this amount, the amount of 60% will be paid in the first two years and the remaining three years – 13.33% per year.
If the number of trees is more than 25 lakh, additional funds will be available, the proposal is stated.
The cost is proposed to be borne from the amount received under the 1% CESS entered in property tax.
It is expected that NMC can produce RS 3 Crore every year from the Cess Tree.
So far, the NMC has restored the Cess Tree of RS14 Crore and the number will be used for work related to their trees and conservation.
