NMC to climb the UG medical chair from 82,500 to 1 lakhby next year

Ahmedabad: The National Medical Commission (NMC) under the Ministry of Health and family welfare is working on plans to increase the total number of undergraduate medical seats up to 1 lakh next year, the source said.
It was discussed at the recent NMC meeting chaired by the Secretary of the Union Health.
“There are currently 82,500 mbbs seats throughout the country and the government plans to take him to 1 lakh within one year,” said a government official.
There are nearly 540 medical colleges in the country that offer MBBS courses, 49% of them are governments managed by the government and the rest are financed and publicly – personally.
“The process of adding new medical colleges and increasing seats for MBBS is currently,” Dr.
Aruna Vanikar, the President of the NMC Bachelor of Medical Education Council, said.

The government is exploring the option to run medical colleges in two shifts to increase the number of student intake.
