No caste census since independence, the government told Lok Sabha

New Delhi: The central government has not calculated the caste population other than the scheduled caste (SCS) and the tribe scheduled since independence, Lok Sabha was informed on Tuesday.
The State Union Minister for Houses Nityanand Rai said the government’s intention to conduct a 2021 census was informed in Indian news on March 28, 2019.
However, he said, because of the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic, census, and related field activities had been postponed up to further orders.
“Caste and tribes that are specifically informed as caste schedules (SCS) and the scheduled tribe (STS) in accordance with the constitution (schedule) of the 1950 order and the order of the constitution (tribes scheduled), 1950, as amended from time to time, is Mentioned in the census.
The Indian government has not mentioned a better caste population other than SCS and STS in the census since independence, “he said in a written reply for a question.
Rai said that the government had agreed to the allocation of RS 8754.23 Crore for the implementation of the Indian Census 2021.
Coverage and accuracy was confirmed by the designated census officers based on the Census Law, 1948 and the rules were framed, he said.
