No flood fear despite heavy rain alert, says water resource dept

BHUBANESWAR: Even as heavy to very heavy rainfall triggered by the southwest monsoon and low pressure is expected in the next three days, state water resources department said there is no fear of flood-like situation in the Mahanadi and other rivers.
“The southwest monsoon has covered entire Odisha and advanced to Chhattisgarh.
Because of it we are expecting medium range rainfall in the Mahanadi upper catchment areas.
According to meteorological department, several districts are expected to witness heavy rainfall.
This may cause increase in the water level of several rivers but it will not trigger a flood-like situation,” said Jyotirmaya Rath, engineer-in-chief, (EIC), of the water resources department.
Officials in the state water resources department said major rivers in the state are flowing well below the danger mark while position in several medium and large reservoirs is also under control.
Briefing on position of Hirakud reservoir, Rath said current water level at Hirakud dam is 600.79 feet on Sunday.
While around 2300 cusec of water is entering Hirakud, around 13,600 cusec is being released through power channels only.
The EIC said upper catchment areas of Mahanadi have received just 14 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours.
