GREATER NOIDA: In an incident that highlights an illegal extortion racket continuing inside the premises of the Greater Noida jail, it has been revealed that kin of some inmates were asked to pay money in exchange of getting illegitimate “facilities” inside the jail.
On the basis of the complaints from two of the inmates, an FIR has been lodged in the case in the Ecotech I police station.
According to the FIR in possession with TOI, two inmates identified as Amanpreet of Ludhiana and Harendra from Harendra from Dadri allegedly gave complaints to the Luksar jailor about the extortion racket being run from inside the jail.
The two inmates alleged that during Covid times, their relatives who would come to meet them were made to deposit money into a Paytm account belonging to a kiryana store owner Rohit Bansal whose store is located in Greater Noida’s Birondi village.
Kin of the inmates were made to transfer money to the Paytm account several times at the behest of some insiders of the Luksar jail.
The inmates have also shared with the jailor the receipts of the Paytm transactions made by their kin.
An FIR has been lodged against the kiryana store owner Rohit Bansal under IPC section 385 (whoever puts any person in fear, or attempts to put any person in fear, of any injury in order to commit extortion) in connection with the complaints.
When contacted, Ecotech I SHO Sharat Kant told TOI that they have booked that the store owner as of now because only he was named in the complaint.
Asked about the insiders involved, he said that the rest was part of investigation.
Earlier in March, an inmate managed to source 450 grammes of cannabis inside the Luksar jail in small packets of namkeen and Kurkure in a bid to distribute the same to inmates during Holi celebrations inside the jail.
Days after the recovery of charas, a mobile phone was recovered from the possession of a female home guard during checking of female inmates and staff in the jail in April after which an FIR was lodged against a female home guard and the inmate for Section 42 of the Jail Act.
