Nagpur: Some betel nut traders from the city have succeeded in spreading trade networks and supply to other cities and other countries, causing losses of crores rupees to the government in the form of tax avoidance.
The immoral traders have succeeded in developing despite repeated actions by different law enforcement agents such as food and drug administration (FDA) and the police department.
In accordance with people, these traders have succeeded in growing their Pan-Indian inventory network from Nagpur when the authorities prefer to close their eyes against their activities after several eye attacks for notes.
The problem of substantial tax avoidance by some betel nut traders came to the center of attention last week when the Nagpur bench from the Bombay High Court had asked the CBI to conduct an investigation into allegations.
Although the Directorate of Income Intelligence (DRI) was also claimed to be in the presence of a court that he had raided and investigated illegal activities of betel nut traders, the bench decided to submit a probe to the CBI.
Following the court order, the CBI has submitted FIR in March this year and also raided a different place last week.
“Nagpur betel nut traders are a major supplier to various cities of Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and also various parts of Telangana like Hyderabad,” said a source.
“This extortion is preparing false documents to produce it on request by agents such as RTO, police and others on the streets as evidence of what is called authentic transactions with the compliance of government tasks,” added the source.
According to the commissioner with FDA Sharad Kolte, the action was taken against betel nut traders.
“The FDA has done some raids in the past too,” he said.
The source states that some traders such as Duo ‘Mama-Bhanje’, Vicky, Agrawal, Anil, Asif, Raju, Haru and many players like that are now under the investigation agency scanner after the CBI initiated action.
Some international agents, who coordinate with Indonesian and Myanmar colleagues like Zakir and Shamim are also under supervision.
According to a social worker, who now intends to intervene in the pill in the court’s domain, say Most betel nuts are sent either in small pieces after ‘chana cutting’ or in a formed form with prohibited tobacco.
“There are around 14 types of Supari available which includes at least 10 local varieties.
Those who come from Indonesia are the cheapest but they are the sub-standards used after fumigation with oxide sulfur that are learned to cause cancer,” he said.
