Now science, arts students can enrol for BCom at VNSGU

Surat: In an important decision on interdisciplinary flexibility in academics, the Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) approved admission of Class 12 students from science and arts streams to Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) course.
The move is part of the several changes likely to be brought in the academic structure of the university to compete with other private universities.
The Diamond City has five private universities in and around Surat.
VNSGU had been mulling the idea for over five years but no decision was taken till now.
“This will help students to choose the course of their preference at a later stage and will provide better employment opportunities as well,” said K N Chavda, vice-chancellor, VNSGU.
However, students from science or art streams enrolling for BCom course will have to clear a bridge course.
There will be three papers on commerce subjects apart from the regular subjects which the students from other streams will have to clear in the first semester itself.
“I have been advocating flexibility in academics which is much needed.
Students should have the liberty to choose their stream at any stage.
Majority of foreign universities have this system,” said Kiran Pandya, head of the department of human resource development and member of National Statistical Commission.
Meanwhile, for students passing the Class 12 examination from boards other than Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSEB), more seats will be available at VNSGU from the next academic session.
A decision in this regard was taken at a syndicate meeting held at the university campus on Monday.
Till now only 10% of the total intake of the university was available for students from other boards.
Now, the university has increased the seats to 20% for students from other boards.
