UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres urged the Myanmar military on Thursday to release the Nobel Winner Aung San Suu Kyi and the President won Myint now, the UN spokesman said on Thursday, the day after thousands of other detainees were released.
Myanmar has been in chaos because the army took power on February 1 and drove the Chosen Suu Kyi government.
“We repeated our calls for direct release of all the people who were arrested arbitrarily, and that included the President won Myint and State Councilor Aung San Suu Kyi,” said Eri Kaneko, a spokesman for the Associate for Guterres.
Myanmar released more than 2,000 prisoners on Wednesday, among them journalists and other people who said the powerful military was held on charges of incitement to take part in protests, local media reported.
Many military opponents have been held, some are punished, under the law of criminizing comments that can cause fear or spread fake news.
Suu Kyi was tried for similar violations, among others, and remained in detention.
“We remain very concerned about the continuation of violence and intimidation, including arbitrary arrests, by security forces,” Keneko said.
