TirunelVeli: Construction of 2,000 megawatts (2 x 1000) units 5 and 6 in the Kudukulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) begins with the ‘first cast of concrete’ on Tuesday.
The project, to be completed at RS 49,621 expenditure, was launched by the Chairperson of the Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy Kamesh Nilkanth Vyas through video conferencing.
KKNPT consists of six units of light water reactors with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts.
It was established in technical cooperation with the Russian Federation.
This project is being implemented in three phases with 2 x 1000 MW in each phase.
Unit 1 and 2, which have a combined capacity of 2,000 MW, is resolved in the first phase, assigned and has produced more than 57,400 million electricity units.
Construction of units 3 and 4 are underway in the second phase and these units with a total of 2,000 MW capacity of almost 50% complete.
According to KKNPP officials, construction in the second phase was delayed because of the pandemic and efforts of Covid-19 were underway to speed up the work.
Construction unit 5 and 6 each will be completed in 66 months and 75 months, respectively.
In the completion of these projects, the six units at the KKNP will produce 6,000 MW net electricity in 2028.
Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev and the Chair and Director of Implementing Corporation Nuclear India Limited (NPCIL) Satish Kumar Sharma also participated in this virtual event together with Senior NPCIL officials, Atomic Energy and Larsen and Toubro.
