New Zealand Blackcaps will play both of their February tests against South Africa in Christchurch, while the international series of one day (ODI) against Australia in March will be contested exclusively in Napier, New Zealand announced on Thursday.
Changes have been requested by sustainable concerns about the spread of Covid-19, with a reduction in travel hopefully reducing the opportunity of an outbreak that will place matches at risk.
Wellington is a big loser in the reshuffle.
It has been scheduled to hold the second African NZ-South-South test and the first two NZ-Australia.
In other schedule changes, the NZ Women’s White Female Series against India (one Twenty20 and Five Odis) will be played solely in Queenstown.
“This risk mitigation is based on avoiding Covid-19 hotspots, and includes limiting air travel, limiting accommodation transfers and, basically, operating in a safer environment,” said the Head of Cricket NZ David White.
“We know more and more of the domestic flights we have, and the more movements among the hotels, the more likely the match or even a series of risks.” White acknowledged the disappointment of Wellington Cricket Fans was undoubtedly the experience, but said the most important thing was to maximize the chances of the match played.
“This is a very difficult time for everyone,” he said.
