Bhubaneswar: This center has approved the installation of 2,542 cellular towers, including 483 in Odisha, under the phase-II of the scheme for cellular service provision in areas affected by left wing extremism, official source said.
The Minister of State for Communication Devusinh Chauhan told Lok Sabha on Wednesday that under the phase-i scheme, 256 cell towers from 261 approved had been installed in Odisha.
“Five towers cannot be installed because of Maoists and the lack of forest permits,” he added.
Teledensity in rural and urban areas in the state until September 30 is 61.87% and 144.14% respectively.
Hundreds of villages in districts dominated by tribes do not have cellular connectivity, source said.

He said about 2,000 cellphone base stations must be arranged to provide cellular connectivity to South and West Odisha.
Chauhan said the Bharatnet project was being implemented in stages to provide broadband connectivity for all grams of panchayats in this country.
In Odisha, Phase-II of the project is being implemented where 2,485 grams of panthayats have made services ready out of planned 2,946 to 30 November, said source.
A total of 6,313 grams of panchayats have been made at Odisha in two phases.
According to the Indian Telecommunication Supervisory Authority, Odisha has 2.11 Broadband Crore customers until October 21.
Similarly, the state has 50.15 internet customers per 100 people.
Internet penetration was 40.61% in rural areas and 91.98% in urban areas.
