Religious: Six prisoners aged between 17 and 18 years, including an accused of murder, fled the house of observations at the early hours of Monday by reducing the boundary wall after breaking the grill.
“We have registered a case based on the Observation House Supervisory Report and has launched an investigation,” said Ram Kumar Murmu, Inspector responsible for the Baidyanathpur police station.
This is the second time in more than a year that inmates have succeeded in escaping from houses run by the Women and Child Development Department.
On May 20 last year, seven inmates managed to escape after attacking the guard.
While six of them were arrested again, one of them had not been traced.
“Two prisoners who fled on Monday came from Ganjam and Coraput Regency each with two others from Gajapati and Puri,” said P R Rao, supervisor of the observation at home.
“While one of the prisoners was allegedly involved in the murder case, the other was here for some robbery cases.
Everything was here for less than a year,” Rao added.
At least 14 CCTV cameras have been installed at the observation house to oversee the inmates lying dead for the past few months.
