Odisha: Bhubaneswar saw 22 honey trap cases in the past year

Bhubaneswar: Think twice before dating someone you meet on social media.
At least 22 cases of honey traps, most involving women lure men through social media and extort them by filing a complaint of rape for extortion money, it has been reported in Bhubaneswar in the past year.
Although the police registered cases of rape on the basis of female complaints, the next investigation revealed that the complainant had lured the people into their traps.
Police recently registered a case against a 62-year-old man on charges of sexual striker a 32-year-old woman in Khandagiri.
The complainant accused him of being angry from his simplicity after making friends on social media.
“We were a little suspicious remembering the age and background of the man.
His children settled outside India.
The parents and women were friends with each other on social media and also met in public places,” said a police officer.
While verifying the accusation of the woman, the police learned that she demanded Rs 5 lakh from the man and threatened to file a complaint of rape against him if he did not pay for money.
When he refused to do it, he filed a complaint.
Realizing that he was framed, the police did not catch him.
This instead issued a warning to the complainant and will submit the final report in court immediately.
“We often come across the cases of innocent people who are involved.
At least 22 such cases come to our notification in the past year.
Instead of verifying the credentials of foreigners (women) on social media, many men end up with rape cases Registered against them, “said a senior police officer.
In some cases, the police were forced to register a rape case after ensuring that the defendant developed a physical relationship with the complainant.
“Even though their intimate relationship is a consensual, we must register a rape case after receiving complaints from women.
Some cases do not reach the police station when the men who are trapped honey are forced to pay money to women to avoid shame and police,” the officer said.
