Odisha: BJD to provide a 40% ticket to OBC for rustic polls, Civic

Bhubaneswar: BJD on Saturday issued a resolution to provide a 40% ticket for OBC candidates in Pancrayat polls and the future Civic body because there will be no reservation for other backup classes in the local body selection.
The BJD Executive Committee, the body of the peak decision-making was led by the Presidential President and the Chair of the Minister of Naveen Patnaik, passed the resolution after being transferred by his secretary of his organization prakash Das.
The decision came a day before the party was set to observe the 25th foundation day.
Although BJD in August announced to provide 27% of tickets to OBC candidates, the Executive Committee has now increased the share to 40%.
BJD’s decision assumes politically as a socially and educational reverse class (SEBC) consists of around 50% of the country’s population even though there is no formal enumeration in the past.
There are around 209 communities identified as SEBC in the state.
While caste politics was not significant in Odisha, political observers said concerns to lose support from classes back after no reservation decision might encourage the powerful party to make decisions more OBC candidates.
Naveen, which is scheduled to overcome BJD workers rather than video conferencing to mark the foundation day, can highlight partys support to the backward class in the upcoming local agency poll.
The Orissa High Court, quoted two recent orders from the Supreme Court, observing that there was no reservation for the backward class.
Following the Court Order, the Panchayati Department of Raj Negara has issued a list of new draft reservations for various post President Zilla Parishad without OBC quota while the Country Cabinet also changes the city law through regulations to drop the order of classes to urban areas.
Das, during the meeting, said because the reservation to the backward class was a national problem, BJD had demanded the center to take the right steps to ensure justice for the community.
He also assured that his party would extend his wholehearted support to the center on any legislative measures to be taken in this matter.
“BJD always emphasizes to empower people who are socially and economically weaker society.
It has also taken several steps for their development and to ensure the same rights as they,” said the watershed.
