BHUBANESWAR: With two major festivals, Savitri Brata and Raja a few days away, the ongoing lockdown has massively affected both shopping and business.
“We had hoped of good business this year and celebrate the festivals with friends and family.
But the second wave has disrupted everything.
Also, the third wave may hit in the next few months.
It is difficult to be positive under such circumstances,” said Parshuram Sahu, owner of a saree store in Ashok Nagar.
Every year, during this time markets are abuzz with people buying sarees, dresses and accessories for the two festivals.
But this year, the usual rush and excitement is missing.
“During Raja and Sabitri, people always shopped more as it is customary for all women and girls to wear new clothes.
But this year, there is despair everywhere.
Most families have either lost their dear ones or got infected.
Even those who want to celebrate cannot do so due to the lockdown.
We have kept some fresh stock for the festival but cannot sell,” said Sitaram Subudhi, another trader.
Traders have urged the government to allow opening of shops for a few hours for shopping by following Covid protocols.
“The number of Covid-19 cases has started falling.
If the government starts unlocking with caution, then both lives and livelihood can be saved,” said P K Jena, president of Central Market Association, popular as Market Building that has more than 200 shops.
Some people are also opting for online shopping, but it is neither feasible nor affordable for all.
“Online shopping takes away the pleasure of physical shopping.
Besides, few people are tech savvy to do so,” asked Malati Sahu, a homemaker.
Not only clothes, people also share delicacies and fruits during these two festivals.
