Odisha: Cyclone Influences Source of Vegetables, Costs Move up

BHUBANESWAR: Three times following rainfall triggered from Cyclone Yaas underwater soil and ruined plants, both harvested and standing, the price of vegetables have gone up from 30 to 50% due to low source.
“Source of veggies into the markets was changed in the past two days because the cyclone.
Even the demand-supply gap has caused the increase in prices of vegetables.
This could persist for a couple more days,” explained Susant Samantray, a vegetable seller in Unit-1 industry.
Until Tuesday, prior to the cyclone struck, individuals handled with all the available inventory.
But following the cyclone the costs have dropped.
“We’re already facing numerous problems including heavy rain, waterlogging in addition to Covid-19.
The high price of veggies has added to the troubles.
Farmers have lost their crops in the flooding so there’s not any choice except to purchase at higher prices,” explained Kartika Parida, a resident of Balasore city.
He stated he purchased tomatoes 20/kg prior to the cyclone, the cost of that has increased to Rs 40/kg.
In the same way, costs of many of the veggies have spanned Rs 50/kg while a number of those vegetables such as bitter gourd, ridge gourd along with drumsticks ranged from Rs 70 to Rs 120/kg.
Because of lockdown, the transport of vegetables is also changed from different countries.
