By Avinash Mohantybalangir: Subarnapur Police on Monday arrested the mother and grandmother of a newborn girl for alleged trying to sell babies after trying to show that she was stolen from the hospital.
The child was allegedly stolen from the District Head Office Hospital in Subarnapur on Saturday.
He recovered by the police on the side of the road, 12 km from the city of Subarnapur.
Pastor Gajendra Tandia, 24, and Malnal Grandma, 52, were arrested and sent to detention for habituation for allegedly conspiring to sell newborns.
“The defendant’s duo has conspired to sell the daughter and tried to show it as theft.
We are investigating more to arrest the defendant who tried to buy a baby,” said Subarnapur police officers, Puspanjali Ningi.
The police suspected the involvement of a man and a woman in buying a baby from his father.
The police gathered more evidence from CCTV recording hospitals, Ningi added.
The police said Gajendra and his in-laws took the child when his mother went to the toilet and then handed it to the woman who was supposed to buy a baby.
