Bhubaneswar: The State Government has planned to promote brackish water aquaculture to improve the rural economy when this sector has a large growth potential in Odisha.
Recently, the Chief Secretary of the Suresh Chandra Mohaparna led the meeting in this matter.
He asked for income and disaster income, fisheries development and animal resources, the Department of Forest and Environment and IDCO to overcome policies facilitating to utilize the potential for available brackish water aquaculture.
IDCO was also asked to develop land banks for it.
Secretary of Fisheries Development and Animal Resources R Raghu Prasad said there was significant growth in this sector in the past 10 years.
Brackish water production increased from 11,460 MT in 2011-12 to 97,125 MT at 2020-21.
The underwater area also increased from 5,860 hectares to 17,780 hectares during the same period.
