Odisha Govt plans to enforce road security laws as an accident and death rise

Bhubaneswar: The state government plans to enforce the Odisha road safety law and appoint senior officers or IPS to exclusively treat road safety problems.
In a recent meeting chaired by the construction commissioner Pradeep Kumar Jena, the government asked the Ministry of Commerce and Transportation to explore the feasibility of formulating road safety laws.
Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Gujarat have enforced it.
In addition, Kerala and Tamil Nadu have also appointed the commissioner of road safety.
Creation of road safety commissioners or the Directorate in Odisha has been considered for some time.
“One Senior IAS or IPS officer with a minimum of 16 years experience can be posted under the Transportation Commissioner to maintain road safety.
New posts for road safety can be made.
The Department of Commerce and Transportation can work towards the enactment of the state road safety authority,” Read Letters official.
Developments assume significance after road death increased by 21% from 2014 (3,931 deaths) up to 4,738 deaths in 2019 even though the Supreme Court Committee in the direction of road safety to reduce deaths from accidents by 2020.

The number of accident deaths, also increased to 1,877 between January and April this year from 1,471 during the appropriate months of 2020, taking a 27.60% increase.
Except Deogarh, Ganjam, Puri and Sonepur, all 26 districts witnessed an increase in accident deaths.
“District collectors have been asked to submit a report on the reasons for abnormal increases in accidents and death within 15 days.
They have also been asked whether they need support from the state government,” said the state transportation secretary of Sudan Padhi to the district collectors on Friday , The government has asked the highway patrol team to improve their performance.
Although the highway patrol system was launched in 19 mini stretches in the state to enforce traffic rules and immediately divert victims of accidents to the nearest hospital, their performance was not satisfactory, reading Padhi’s letter.
