Bhubaneswar: The chair quota for backward classes in local body polls in the state will range from zero percent in several regencies to a maximum of 27% in others, in accordance with the government’s plan to change the relevant law limit the overall quota to 50%.
The state government on Monday introduced the Bill 2021 Municipal Odisha (Amendment), which proposed to maintain the overall reservation in the urban local body selection of up to 50% to comply with the direction of the court.
It is possible to introduce the Bill 2021 Bill 2021 Odisha for a quota hat in the three-tier Panchayat poll at 50% on Tuesday.
According to the bill, the maximum quota limit for OBC will continue to 27%.
This will, however, subject to the condition that the overall reservation for all categories (SCS, ST, OBC) is united will not exceed 50% to comply with the direction of the court.
A senior government official said the quota for SCS and ST will be decided on the basis of the percentage of their population, according to the 2011 census, in every environment, Panchayat, Blocks and Districts.
In the district like Puri where the percentage of SCS (19.4%) and ST (0.36%) is very lacking, the OBC quota can touch the upper limit of 27%.
In the area scheduled with the dominant tribal population such as Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Coraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangapur and Raya, the OBC quota will be zero.
