BHUBANESWAR: At a early in Odisha, the state administration has chosen to establish a dedicated ward for offenders belonging to the transgender community in Jharpada particular prison in the capital town.
At the next stage, these facilities will be expanded to other group, district and unique jails in the nation.
Even the prisons directorate said that the movement is aimed at protecting the human rights problems of transgender inmates, who was facing annoyance in jails.
At the moment, the Jharpada prison authorities maintain transgender offenders in human cells, that are in fact intended for history-sheeters.
Jharpada now has 10 cells.
“It’s very risky and dangerous to maintain the transgender offenders with female or male offenders.
So we’ve opted to establish a 10-bed ward solely to the transgender community.
The ward is going to be built at a segregated area on the assumptions of Jharpada particular prison and don’t have any connections with the female and male wards,” manager general (prisons directorate and correctional services) Santosh Kumar Upadhyay stated.
The transgender defender will probably have different tub cubes, hallway and reading space for these offenders.
At present, the Jharpada prison does not have any transgender inmates.
The prison often obtained such under trial offenders after their arrests in connection with theft in stations and trains, extortion and prostitution instances, the prison sources said.
“We welcome this kind of reform at the prison.
A few of the community members have been arrested and lodged in Jharpada prison several years back.
They were emotionally and sexually abused from several infamous offenders.
The devoted ward for transgender criminals will now guarantee their security,” explained Kajal, a third party pioneer.
Even the prisons directorate also has determined to have a dedicated ward for older under trial prisoners and convicts in Jharpada particular prison.
“We’ll also have ten top security cells for both history-sheeters in Jharpada jail,” Upadhyay stated.
He explained the prisons directorate will raise the potential for their 87 jails from the country by 3,000.
At the moment, the scheduled potential of this 87 jails is currently 19824.
Though the present population has been decreased to 18,580 in light of this decongestion drive after Covid epidemic, many jails frequently remained overcrowded around this year.
