Odisha: Peacock population Climbs to 2000 in Pakidi

BERHAMPUR: Each monsoon, peacocks could be seen dancing around the Pakidi slopes and drifting freely in the neighboring regions because of the security and care provided to them from the regional villagers.
Individuals of seven cities — Sobhachandrapur, Ambuabadi, Kerikerijhola, Bharatapalli, Cheramaria, Sameiguda and Karnoli — are shielding the critters for the past several decades.
“Their population has steadily risen to 2,000 because of the participation of local people in their defense,” said divisional forest officer, Ghumusar South woods branch, Satya Narayan Behura.
“As noise and air pollution have diminished as a result of lockdown, a few of the birds may be retrieved on the streets,” he added.
Villagers shield the bird since they think that the peacock is a harbinger of good luck for them.
“Although the birds ruin their plants, nevertheless villagers don’t result in any damage for them,” said forest range officer, Aska, ” K Sahu.
Very good forest cover at the mountain and absence of forest fires are also a few reason for the rise in the population, said that the DFO.
The villagers have included a committee to safeguard them.
The committee obtained the esteemed Biju Patnaik Award for Wildlife Conservation, the maximum award at the country for protecting the wildlife, even for its efforts to preserve the peacock habitat from 2006.
“We’ve generated awareness among people in the value of security of creatures in the region frequently,” said president, peacock defense committee president, Sameer Pradhan.
Even the villagers not simply protect them from poachers but also feed them set up water containers close to the village through summers so they can consume.
With the growth in people, the critters are currently visiting Bandhaguda and Baramundali, ” he explained.
