Bhubaneswar: To strengthen the police station, the state government has decided to appoint sub-inspectors (SIS) to lead the unit.
Previously, officers at the rank of Sub-Inspector Assistant (ASIs) were used to lead the police posts.
At least 216 police posts have functions under the control of the police station throughout the state.
The Chairman of the Naveen Patnaik Minister on Tuesday approved the appointment of SIS to lead the posts.
216 Police posts that come under the Police Commissioner, District Police and Government Train Police will now be manned by SIS.
“Training and experience they will help control the crime and legal situation and order at the outpost level,” said a written message from the office of the minister’s chairman.
Recently, the state police headquarters sent a proposal to the state government to appoint sis to lead the police posts.

The government has appointed ASI to lead the posts as a police station which was once led by SIS.
Because the police station is now being paired by inspector’s ranking officers, the government wants to increase the position of the functional head of the post from ASI to SI.
“We have advantages now with the appointment of SIS as head of the leading post.
Asis from the police station and the posts are authorized to investigate small crimes such as theft and grab.
The empowered to investigate serious and important cases, involving rape and murder,” Director said Police General (Crime Branch) Sanjeeb Panda.
In accordance with existing practices, the leading post can receive complaints and send it to the police station concerned for registration of formal or fir.
After registration of this case, Inspector-incharge (IIC) from the police station concerned will assign postal officers to investigate this case.
When heading towards a small unit (outpost), SIS will get exposure and experience to lead the police station in the future when they are promoted to the rank of Inspector, Panda said.
