Bhubaneswar: The Country Cabinet, led by the Head of Minister of Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday approved the Amendment of Panchayat and the City Law to limit reservations within 50%.
Although the details of the meeting were not revealed, the source said three amendment bills from the Department of Pancayati Raj and two bills from the Department of Housing and Urban Development would be immediately submitted in assembly to be approved.
Sources said the state government has reduced class reservations to around 10% to 11% in the encompatible law.
Part of the bill in assembly will open the way for the three-level Panchayat selection scheduled for early next year and polls for 114 urban local agencies, which are carried out by the Bureaucrat appointed by the State for the past three years since elections have not been held due to legal issues.
Odisha has a 27% quota provisions for the resignation community in Panciran and Civic Body for more than two decades, taking a total percentage of reservations to around 65%, until the last Panchayat election was held in 2017.
However, the Orissa High Court.
In April 2018 it has directed the state government to reduce the total percentage to 50%, which was then also enforced by the Supreme Court.
There is a need to change the law of Panchayat and the city also to limit reservations in 50%.
Because amendment bills tend to get approval from assembly during the ongoing session, the election of Panchayat and the city is likely to be held early next year.
