Coimbatore: After replacing the old street light bulbs with LED lights, City Corporation has sold nearly 59,000 old tubers from various types when they remain not used.
Lights 58, 878 are sold to a company based in Chennai through a bidding process at RS 74, 85, 541 inclusive GST.
The sale was approved by a special council meeting held in front of the corporate commissioner King Gopal Sunkara on October 28.
The official from the corporation said work to replace old tubers such as tube lights, CFL and sodium steam lights at 60 Wards City began in 2018 and ended in 2020 under the Smart City scheme.
The project was taken to reduce electricity bills, because the old conventional tubers consumed more power, and to bring uniformity in the type of street light bulb used in the city.
A total of 9, 310 tube lights, 10,055 CFL lights and 39, 513 sodium steam lights ranged from 70-watts to 400-watts lying silent at the Corporation warehouse.
While it was decided to monetize old tubers, the supply process opened in September and the company based in Chennai quoted the highest number.
The official said every 40 watt tube lights were sold at Rs 33, sodium steam lights with a capacity of 250 watts at RS 212 respectively and 400 watt light bulbs sold at RS 312 respectively.
