Tokyo: A member of the Japanese Gold Medal Softball Team will replace his medal with a new one after the Mayor of his hometown falls in the original, said the Tokyo 2020 organizer on Thursday, following protests on social media.
At an event was held last week to celebrate the achievements of Miu Goto in Tokyo 2020 Games, Takashi Kawamura, Mayor of the city of Nagoya Central, pulled his mask and put his gold medal between his teeth.
“With the support of the International Olympic Committee and in line with its own intention, MS Goto medal will now be exchanged for a new one,” said Tokyo 2020 organizers, added that the IOC would bear the cost of exchanges.
The mayor receives a wave of criticism of social media because it ignores Coronavirus etiquette and is accused of showing a lack of respect for His achievements.
There is even a rare rebuke of the Toyota Motor Corp, which has a Red Terrier softball team played by Goto.
Goto or Kawamura is not immediately available for comments.
