Tokyo: World number one Ashleigh Barty fell from the Olympic Women’s Single Tennis Tournament in the opening round on Sunday, losing 6-4, 6-3 to Spain Sara Sara Sorribes Tormo.
Barty, the ruling Wimbledon champion, dropped servicing twice in each set when Sorribes Tormo who was ranked 48th made only five unforgettable mistakes for Australians to get shock victory.
“Feeling amazing, I still can’t believe it,” said Sorribes Tormo, who will continue to face Fiona Ferro France in the second round.
“It was something extraordinary for me.
It was something I dreamed of all my life, being here and even more scoring the world number one.
I am super, very happy.” While Barty’s offer to become the first Australian Single Gold Medal in Tennis ended prematurely, he and Storm Sanders partner to the second round of women.
Barty has the potential to appear against Sorribes Tormo again in the quarter-finals of the competition.
Soribes Tormo and Paula Badosa are in the first round of action later on Sunday.
