Stockholm: Soaring Omicron cases around the world can increase the risk of newer and more dangerous variants that arise, the World Health Organization in Europe warns on Tuesday.
While the variants spread like fire throughout the world, it seems far more severe than being feared at first and has raised hope that pandemics can be overcome and live back to more normal.
But who is the senior emergency officer Catherine Smallwood sounds an unpleasant cautious tone, tells AFP that the level of infection that surges can have the opposite effect.
“The more dissemination of omicrons, the more transmitted and more replication, the more likely to remove a new variant.
Now, omicron turns off, it can cause death …
maybe a little less than Delta, but who says what the next variant can Discarded, “said Smallwood to AFP in an interview.
Europe has registered more than 100 million Covid cases since the commencement of Pandemi, and more than five million new cases in the last week of 2021, “almost qualified what we have seen in the past”, said Smallwood.
“We are in a very dangerous phase, we see the rate of infection rising very significantly in Western Europe, and the full impact of unclear,” he said.
Small wood also notes that while “at the individual level there may be a risk of inpatient care” with the omicron variant compared to delta, overall, omicron can pose a greater threat because of the larger number of cases.
“When you see cases up so significantly, it is likely to produce more people with severe illness, ending in the hospital and maybe it will die,” he said.
England on Tuesday faced a warning from the hospital crisis that will come because of the lack of staff caused by the wave of omicron infection, because the country’s Daily Covid case violated 200,000 for the first time.
Smallwood said he hoped the scenario would play in other European countries too.
“Even in a health system that is burned with good capacitation, there is a real struggle that occurs now, and this possibility will play throughout the region when Omicron pushes the case up.”
