Chennai: The 21-year-old young man was robbed by a man, which he was friends with the social networking site, in the Ombanghur.
He was relieved with his cellphone and Rs 5,000 in cash by men and his friends.
The victim, identified as Balaji, a Ayapakkam resident near Avadi, was invited by his online ‘friend’.
The man introduced himself as Manoj.
After sharing a message for two months, he invited Balaji to his house.
He tells him that his parents also wanted to see it and that he wanted to introduce them to them.
Manoj came to a twowheeler to choose Balaji.
Even though he told him his house was in Maduravoyal, he kept riding a bicycle for almost two hours without taking him home.
Finally, instead of going to his house, he took him to the Beds of Lake Arathurur.
Balaji found three other men waiting there.
Manoj and his friends then threatened and implanted Balaji.
They held him in the knifepoint and forced him to pay Rs 5,000 using a digital wallet and took his cellphone.
He was left in the place and gang members made their way out.
He deleted his account from social media sites.
After the incident, Balaji filed a complaint with the Thirumullaivoyil Police Station to arrest those behind the robbery.
The police suspected the victim to believe it to become a girl and enter the conversation and then fell into the trap.
However, they are investigating.
With the help of the identity given by Balaji, the police also checked CCTV camera records to capture offenders.
Lately, several gangs were found using this modus operandi and robbed people throughout the city.
“Many times, they posed as a woman and trap of people.
Many men became victims and fear of submitting police complaints,” said a senior police officer.
