Mumbai: Only 7,057 Mumbaikars Got Covid-19 Although fully vaccinated, according to data released by the BMC health department.
This figure is calculated from the Report of Covid War Space Civic when the number of people who were vaccinated in Mumbai stood at 20 lakh against 24.89 lakh on Monday night.
“This managed to become 0.34% of people who were fully vaccinated to get a breakthrough of Covid infection,” said BMC Health Officer Dr.
Mangala Gomare on Monday.
The definition of breakthrough infection is when a disease affects a person even though he is vaccinated against him.
Of the 7,057 which got a breakthrough Covid-19 infection, 52% or 3,694 was a senior citizen over 60 years old.
“However, infected 60-plus groups only contributed 0.5% of senior citizens who were fully vaccinated in the city so far,” said Dr.
Gomare.
Senior citizens have emerged as the most vulnerable group in Pandemic Covid-19 so far, both in terms of morbidity and mortality.
2,156 (0.3%) was in the age group 44-59 and the remaining 1,207 (0.2%) was in the age group 18-44, Dr.
Gomare added.
While there are discussions that are widespread and fear of a new Covid variant that affects people who are fully vaccinated, BMC officials say that new data shows the vaccine offers protection for the majority.
“Vaccines do not offer 100% protection against diseases, and these statistics show this,” said a senior civil hospital doctor.
Dr.
Shashank Joshi, who is a member of the state government assignment unit in Covid-19, said that a low breakthrough infection.
“Mumbai data seems not different from those that emerge from all over the world.
Global data has shown that vaccines offer protection against death and the severity of the disease,” said Dr.
Joshi.
However, he said BMC must provide further details about how many of these 7,057 suffer from severe illness and require hospitalization.
