Mangaluru: With the hijab problem creating a problem in Pompei College in Aikala Karnataka on Wednesday, the college authorities have decided to allow students to only wear the specified uniform.
It comes after the pictures and videos of students wearing a turmeric scarf on campus become viral.
College is in Kinnigoli, about 30 km from Mangaluru.
Purushothothama KV, Principal, said that it has been decided to allow students to only wear a prescribed uniform, thus indicating that the hijab (headscarf) or a turmeric scarf will not be permitted.
He said that colleges organized a coordination committee meeting on Thursday.
The meeting was attended by community leaders (representatives of the Mosque Committee and BJP leaders), old students, members of the Leadership Council, representatives from the Joint Director’s Office, Police Department and Panchayat.
The decision of the leadership council who met earlier during the day was delivered to the members.
Those who attended the meeting agreed with the College’s decision that only prescribed the uniform that would be permitted.
The principal said that Muslim students have been wearing a hijab in class five years and no one raised the problem.
However, suddenly on Tuesday around 34 students came wearing Syning Safron, without sending a note or request to the principal or management.
“When I asked them, as if they had a holy reason (Ziah Sabarimala) for wearing a scarf, they said, if Muslim students wear a headscarf, we will wear a turmeric scarf.
They don’t give scope to discuss this issue,” he said.
After this, the emergency meeting of the Leadership Council was held, and then the meeting of stakeholders.
It is based that local organizations support students.
A Bajrang Dal leader allegedly warned college that Hindus must be allowed to wear a turmeric scarf, if Muslims are allowed to wear a headscarf.
The classes are done as usual with students wearing a turmeric scarf and headscarf.
College has around 335 students.
It can be remembered that a similar incident reported in Chikkamagaluru after a piece of students in a bachelor’s degree in Koppa came to campus wearing a safron scarf on Monday.
As of December 31, the Government of PU College for girls in Udupi was a witness to the hijab controversy after six PUC students, supported by the campus in front of India, accused the principal of not allowing students to wear headscarves in the classroom.
They claim that students from other religions are permitted to wear Bindi and Bangles.
