Chennai: College students aged 18 years and over will not be allowed to attend offline classes in Tamil Nadu if they are not vaccinated against Covid-19, Minister of Health MA Subramanian said here on Friday.
During the past four weeks, at least three Covid-19 clusters were reported from college.
Subramanian said Director of Technical Education and Director of Collegiate Education would write to college asked them to ensure only students who were vaccinated permitted.
Two weeks ago, the country asked all universities to start sixth grade.
On Thursday, around 10 students from Anna University were tested positively.
“There are no new cases in the cluster, but the threat of infection looks great.
So far, only 46% of engineering students who have taken the first dose and 12% have completed the course,” Subramanian said.
Most students from IIT-M have completed the course, he said.
“We have asked the college administrator to verify this once again,” he said.
Last week, 11 students from nursing college in Chennai were tested positively.
Data is available with the Ministry of Higher Education shows that nearly 65% of art students are mostly vaccinated and around 19% are fully vaccinated.
“In addition to making mandatory vaccinations, we will arrange vaccine camps in all universities,” said the Higher Education Secretary D Karthikeyan.
The department will also suppress students to comply with the Covid-19 protocol – wear masks in the classroom, maintain social distance and hand hygiene.
Over the past few weeks, the Department of Public Health and Corporation Greater Chennai have found that in most educational institutions, the risk of spreading high infection in the canteen and dining room.
New regulations will make it mandatory for universities to ensure that students served food in disposable containers.
“To avoid density, colleges must send them to the canteen in a batch,” Subramanian said.
Universities will be prohibited from holding back functions without the approval of the government, he added.
