GUWAHATI: A barbarous mob attack on a government physician in Assam’s Hojai district on the departure of a Covid individual that was not even under his maintenance resulted in the arrest of 24 individuals, including three minors, also triggered by a boycott of inpatient services by physicians throughout state-run hospitals around Wednesday.
The arrests were completed over 12 hours with a movie revealing Dr Seuj Kumar Senapati being assaulted in the Udali Covid care center at Hojai, about 170km in Guwahati, on Tuesday.
The physician had only began his 1.30pm change on Tuesday after he discovered that a patient recognized as Giyasuddin had expired, the center’s nodal officer Dr Imran Hussain stated.
As relatives of the dead person went following Senapati and also vandalised the center, the mob climbed to 25-30 people, witnesses said.
The only constable on duty has been a spectator into the attack.
Before Senapati, who’s being treated for multiple injuries, the mob targeted nurse Lalita Bharali.
“They attempted to strangle me asked for the physician’s telephone number,” explained the nurse, who hid in a bathroom since the rampage continued.
Amid outrage and demonstration from the medical fraternity, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, who had been visiting Delhi, tweeted the the”offenders involved with this attack” was identified and detained.
A Hojai court remanded seven of the 24 detained in police custody for 3 days along with 14 in criminal custody.
The three were delivered to a juvenile home.
DGP Bhaskar Mahanta said that the authorities were searching for four additional suspects and could record”a solid chargesheet” from the case shortly.
