OPS urges CM to roll back decision to open Tasmac shops

CHENNAI: AIADMK coordinator O Panneerselvam on Saturday urged Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin to roll back the state government’s decision to open Tasmac liquor outlets in 27 districts on June 14.
In a statement, the former chief minister pointed to 15,759 daily cases reported on June 11 and the death of 378 people.
“The chief minister should think whether the decision to permit the Tasmac shops to function is appropriate when there is a three-fold rise in the number of cases and deaths than last year,” OPS said, adding that human life was more than the government’s revenue.
Panneerselvam recalled the black flag protest by Stalin and his partymen in May last year, when the previous AIADMK government announced opening of liquor shops in Chennai police limits.
Then fresh Covid-19 cases and deaths were hovering around 3,000 and 30 respectively.
The opening of shops was put off to August but still the then opposition leader alleged that the move would lead to a rise in cases and the shops should not be opened, OPS recalled.
