Orangutans back at mysuru zoo after four and a half decades

MySuru: The 129-year-old Mysuru Zoo that boasts showing many exotic animals adds one more feather in the lid with two species of exotic animals – orangutans and gorillas.
This will make the zoo the only facility in India to accommodate this primate in captivity.
The zoo will feature orangutans almost after five decades, say authority.
It was in the early 1970s that the zoo had a pair of orangutans.
They are popularly overcome as ‘Subba – Subbi.’ After passing them, there is no Indian zoo that has primates.
MySuru Zoo has made the best effort over the past few years to get orangutans.
Finally, the facility has received one partner from the Singapore Zoo and from the Malaysian Zoo.
The ape reached Mysuru after traveling for 12 hours including air travel and road in August.
Since then, they have been stored under observation.
Executive Director of the Ajit Kulkarni Zoo said two pairs of orangutans and a pair of gorillas would definitely be a star attraction.
“They will be ownership of our zoo because we are the only zoo to display strong and intelligent primates throughout India,” he said.
Visitors Zoo Mysuru will definitely enjoy seeing primates that will be displayed in four weeks.
New enclosures are being prepared to accommodate them.
Sensitive orangutans but bright apes.
They are endangered species originating from the Kalimantan Islands.
MySuru Zoo, which is the only facility for successfully breeding giraffes, avoiding a pair of crystal giraffe in exchange for orangutans.
The age of orangutans in captivity is around 40 years.
AFA, 7, men and Minnie, 5, derived from Malaysia while Merlin, 17, Male and Atina, 13, came from Singapore.
Six caregivers have been trained to treat primates who are herbivores and eat foliage and fruits.
Gorilla travels for 30 hours! A pair of gorillas – Thabo, 14, and Demba, 8, both men, reached Mysuru after traveling for 30 hours from the zoo in Germany through Qatar and landed in Bengaluru.
From there they were taken to Mysuru via road.
Ajit Kulkarni, an IFS officer, said the ape was healthy and active.
“After we lost Polo, Gorilla who entertained visitors with behavior in 2014, the zoo tried hard to get gorillas.
After years of trying, we have received a pair.
The International Zoo Association has promised to set aside female gorila,” he said.
With these two new exotic species, Zoo Mysuru has a long list of exotic species that are not owned by other Indian zoos.
It’s also the only zoo that has white rhinos, African cheetahs and now primates.
Infosys Foundation contributed RS 20 Lakh Mysuru Zoo authorities expressed his gratitude to the Head of Foundation Infosys Sudha Murthy after the Foundation recently contributed RS 20 lakh for animal maintenance.
