Traditionally the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences takes no less than a seven-day streak in Los Angeles theatres for films to qualify for Hollywood’s biggest prize.
With large screens shut, these principles were relaxed this past year, in what has been widely viewed as a boost for films on streaming programs.
“This calendar year, that is still influenced by the outbreak, eligibility conditions for its 94th Academy Awards are consistent with all the addendums created for its 93rd Prizes season,” stated the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in a declaration.
Movies released at theatres in five important cities out Los Angeles will stay qualified, and the modifications will be set to be expanded to the next year’s Oscars, and possibly beyond.
But with US film theaters today mainly reopened and movie creation accelerating again, this past season’s decision to expand the calendar window where movies can be published and still be eligible for Oscars won’t be replicated.
Films wanting to compete for the next year’s Oscars has to be published from December 31.
The Academy’s choice to postpone can cause other important Hollywood award ceremonies to follow suit in a domino effect.
However, NBC has announced that the next year’s conventional season-opening Golden Globes won’t be broadcast because of an ongoing row on the organizers’ document on transparency and diversity.
