Thane: The police have arrested a 44-year-old man from Nalasopara in the neighboring Palghar district for allegedly deceiving several shop owners by making a telephone call in a woman’s voice, an official said on Friday.
Crime officials of the Navi Mumbai police branch arrested the defendant, identified as Manish Shashikant Amkarkar, and his accomplice of Anthony Thayappa Jangli (37), he said.
Overcoming a press conference at NE Police Commissioner, DCP (crime) Suresh Mengde said that amluicance was used to pose as a female doctor and order medicines from medical stores and gold bracelets from jewelry.
The defendant used to tell the victims to send someone from their shops by saying he wanted to buy medicines or bracelets.
But when someone from the shop arrived at the designated place, the defendant would approach the person saying that the female doctor sent him.
He then will submit a fake 2,000 Rs record to that person, police official said.
After getting the remaining amount, he will escape from that place, he added.
The police have received several complaints from the Navi Mumbai region, after they launched the probe and accused the defendant.
The defendant had committed a similar violation in Alibaug, Pena (in Raigad District), Vashi (Navi Mumbai) and Gujarat as well, said police officials, added that a total of 20 such violations had been registered in different places.
The police have confiscated cars and other materials, collectively worth RS 5 Lakh, from the Duo Defendant, he said.
